a message to the water walkers...

A young female attorney posted on a legal social media platform about the difficult time she was having as an Associate at a large firm. What stood out to me was her mention of not feeling valued, and that her troubles at work were making her physically sick. I am astonished by how many people suffer day in and day out in work environments that are not suited for them. Some navigate these spaces quite well, and excel in them. They are on a specific assignment to break down the barriers. Others find themselves awake in the middle of the night, trying to find peace, solace and comfort in a social media post to strangers. I responded to her post with something along the lines of:

“My love, you are entitled to a peace that surpasses your understanding. It is your birth right. But you must  get very clear on what will give you peace in this very moment of your life. Take some time to yourself, silence the noise, ask the deep questions, wait for the answers, then move accordingly. If where you are right now is the experience you truly want for yourself, and it is aligned with the work you have been called to do, then ask the Universe and ancestors to make some shifts in your current space such that the people who are making your work life so difficult will be moved out of your path. If you still choose law, but in a different environment, ask for the ways forward  to be made. My point, my love, is this: no matter what or how you feel right now, you still have all of the power. And realizing your power is the truest revelation, and all of the glory. You see, we, [black] women, however our beautiful and brilliant selves choose to show up in this world, are sovereign. 

Your body is telling you that this situation, as it is at the moment, is not working for you. Shift. Don’t shrink. Don’t hide. Don’t run. Just shift, and know that the grace that is always afforded to you will make a way. Sending you much love as you navigate this.”

WE  ARE  SOVEREIGN. 

Sovereign is defined as: of the most exalted kind; having undisputed ascendancy; possessed of a supreme power. Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, 2020. Web. June 15, 2020.

Being sovereign is a woman's true nature. We are the source, even if we don't choose or are unable to birth a child from our womb. We are the light bearers, the fire, the wind and the waters. The chaos of life, the lies we are told, the abuses that we suffer, the doors that seem shut in our face, and the people we have to carry even when we need to be carried ourselves prevent us from realizing and experiencing this absolute truth. 

And yet still, my wish for all of us is sovereignty. 

I did not have my path figured out when I began creating this site. I just knew that I needed to create. I knew that I uprooted myself from all that was familiar and that I wanted a hub to share, emote, continue to heal, talk about marriage, discuss law, food, travel and all of the things that bring me joy. But my meditation this morning revealed just how much my life experiences are what brought me to this space. My boldness to navigate some really murky stuff, to tell my truth, my commitment to wholeness by any means necessary, my willingness to do the hard, painful work ---  are my offerings to the world. I was hurt and then healed so that I can coach others through their journey. I was broken and then mended so that I can help others gather their pieces. I have unearthed the God IN me so that I can help other women tap into their divinity. I searched and found within so that I can support others through their wilderness. Ahhhhh.... and we have arrived. Let's break the chains together. 

The first time I visited the slave dungeons in Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa, I found myself sitting, contemplative, next to the river outside of the Elmina Castle. That day I experienced a level of clarity and truth that would change my life forever. The lessons came from paying attention to the Water. She, divine and all-knowing, whispered: “We suffered, so that you don't have to. Free your mind from the rhetoric and indoctrination. The truth has already set you free. Walk in it. Restoration and balance are the inevitable, and healing flows freely like the waters. You don't have to beg and plead for what's already yours, just create a space to manifest it. The same God that is in the river is the same God that is in you – the same force, the same power, the same wisdom, and the same ability to flow through absolutely anything."
